Homemade Laundry Detergent for Natural Cleaning

As we all know, laundry detergent is expensive and full of chemicals. However, it’s not just the cost that bothers me that much — it’s the fact that most detergents are filled with toxic chemicals like bleach and phosphates. I don’t want to expose my family to those chemicals when we wash our clothes at home.

So, I set out to make my own detergent. It’s really easy to do, inexpensive, and better for your health. You can make this simple DIY recipe in under 5 minutes from ingredients you probably already have on hand (and if not, they’re cheap).

This natural laundry soap will leave your clothes clean without exposing you or your kids to harmful toxins. Plus, it smells fantastic too! Here’s how:

Ingredients (laundry soap):

  • ½ cup of baking soda
  • ¼ cup of washing soda
  • ¼ cup of castile soap
  • Essential oils (optional)

Instructions:

Just mix all ingredients in a container, and you’re good to go. If you want, you can add 20-30 drops of your favorite essential oil for a lovely scent. I like to use lavender or citrus oils because they are both refreshing and antibacterial.

This detergent will last for about 32 loads of laundry, depending on the size of your load. In a family of five (two adults and three kids under five), we’ll use about two tablespoons per load, so it lasts us almost six months.

You can use this homemade laundry soap on any clothing, including baby clothes and cloth diapers (I personally don’t use cloth diapers since my kids are potty trained, but I know many people who do, and this detergent works great for them).

It’s gentle enough for even the most sensitive skin types out there. Give it a try, and let me know what you think!

You can also make a natural bathroom cleaner with just a few simple ingredients. This recipe is also incredibly easy to make and uses ingredients you probably already have on hand.

Ingredients (bathroom cleaner):

  • ½ cup vinegar (white or apple cider)
  • Water to fill your spray bottle up about halfway

Instructions:

Mix the ingredients in a spray bottle, and you’re good to go! You can use this cleaner for just about any surface, including glass shower doors, tile floors, counters — pretty much any surface that you want to clean.

This recipe is also great for cleaning the inside of your refrigerator, as well as potpourri jars and candle holders (just make sure they are completely dry before using this cleaner).

You can use this homemade bathroom cleaner on shower tiles or glass doors without leaving behind streaks or a film. If you have a really tough mess to clean, you can add a little bit of baking soda to the mixture and leave it there for a few minutes before scrubbing. It will work like a charm!

Conclusion

Homemade laundry detergent is the solution for you to clean your clothes without exposing yourself or your family to harmful toxins.

Not only will you help protect yourself from the harmful chemicals found in most store-bought brands, but you also save money by making your own homemade laundry soap.

You’ll love how clean clothes come out when using this natural homemade recipe with no weird smells or residue left behind like some commercial products have. Plus, it is so much fun experimenting with different scents and combinations.

Try adding lemon essential oil for an extra scent boost or oatmeal to give your clothes a softness boost while they wash — there are endless options here.
